Welcome to the 602nd Direct Air Support Flight at Bergstrom AB - Austin TX
At this time Bergstrom AFB was switching from
being a SAC air base to that of TAC.
The 602nd DASS was assigned to the following in order:
1. Det 1 of the 4405 AB Group (TAC) then to
2. 4471st Consol Acft Main Sq (TAC) then to
3. 602 TAC Control Group (TAC) then to
4. 602 DAS Squadron (TAC)
While I stationed at Bergstrom AFB, I was sent
back to Keesler AFB to be trained on the
AN / TRX-87 UHF Heavy Ground Radio and also received training on several other
radios that we used in control of aircraft in close air support rolls. I also
returned
to being in Radio Maintenance instead of being a full time ROMAD. I did
however participate
in several ROMAD operations while here training officers how we did it in the
field in Vietnam.
We used the M151-A1 Jeep but the radios were both the MRC-107 and MRC-108's.
Here are some pictures that I took while stationed at Bergstrom between July 1966 ~ June 1967.
